Body on Fire: Inflammatory Mediators Linking
Oral and Systemic Health
Kelli
Swanson Jaecks, RDH, MA
Inflammatory mediators are key players in the
body’s normal host response of inflammation.
While the inflammatory response is considered of
prime importance to the body’s immune system in
fighting disease, it can also have deleterious
effects. The inflammatory mediators activated in
chronic periodontal disease have unique
correlations to heart disease, diabetes and
pregnancy complications. Understanding how
inflammatory mediators act at the cellular and
tissue levels brings clarity to their role in
linking periodontal disease and systemic
conditions. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory
oral rinses will be highlighted as positive
adjuncts to oral hygiene care and disease
prevention.
After attending this presentation, the
participant should be able to:
• Recognize the mechanism and role of
inflammation in the body
• Identify key inflammatory mediators and their
systemic action
• Understand periodontal disease as a chronic
inflammatory disease
• Explore the connection of inflammation and
periodontal disease with heart disease, diabetes
and pregnancy
• Discovery new technologies and adjunctive
therapies for effective diagnosis and treatment
This course can be adapted for a 2 or 3 hour

Salivary
Diagnostics:
Test, Don't Guess: Salivary Diagnostics in
Dentistry
Kelli
Swanson Jaecks, MA, RDH
Course Description:
The
field of oral medicine is changing rapidly with
the advent of DNA-PCR testing. Extracting DNA
from saliva for risk assessment and diagnostic
tests in dentistry is cutting edge technology
for individualized patient care. Leading
research has confirmed that periodontal diseases
are complex inflammatory reactions to the
presence of specific pathogenic bacteria and
that some individuals are genetically more
susceptible to periodontal infections.
Pathogenic bacteria and host response are both
key factors in the etiology and clinical
outcomes of periodontal disease treatment.
New evidence has linked the presence of HPV in
an oral mucosal infection to the increase risk
of oral cancer. It has been a challenge in the
past to identify those individuals with these
increased risk factors. Now the dental
professional has available salivary DNA
diagnostic testing to establish risk and help
guide treatment therapy for periodontal
infections, periodontal susceptibility and HPV
mucosal infections. Join us as we look at the
world of salivary diagnostic testing for
dentistry.
Educational Objectives:
•
Understand salivary diagnostic testing for
specific periodontal pathogens
• Discover how genetic susceptibility can affect
treatment outcomes
• Identify SRP-Resistant Micro-organisms and
their complexes
• Understand the oral cancer risk associated
with Oral HPV infections and how to identify
them

Burning Down the House:
Understanding Inflammation’s Role in Oral/Systemic
Connections
Chronic inflammation is reported as the strongest
correlation between periodontal disease and
systemic disease. When inflammation is unchecked,
multiple systems within the body can be negatively
affected. Unique correlations to heart disease,
diabetes, pregnancy complications, arthritis, and
digestive complications are seen in conjunction
with the inflammatory response activated in
periodontal disease. Dental professionals are
expected to educate their patients about the
systemic risks of periodontal disease and be a
part of the dental/medical collaboration of shared
patients.
How do we communicate these potential
health-altering links to our patients? How can we
gain confidence in talking to other medical
professionals about our shared patients? This
interactive workshop will give you keys to answer
these questions and more.
After attending this presentation, the participant
should be able to:
• Review the mechanism and role of inflammation in
the body
• Understand periodontal disease as a chronic
inflammatory disease
• Explore the connection of inflammation and
periodontal disease with many
systemic conditions
• Increase understanding of inflammation
vocabulary
• Gain confidence in collaborating with medical
providers about shared patients
